Meet Dr. Shwetabh Rai, Fracture Surgeon in Varanasi

Dr. Shwetabh Rai, orthopedic and spine surgeon at Shubhyash Hospital, Varanasi

Dr. Shwetabh Rai is a consultant orthopedic and trauma surgeon in Varanasi who performs 10 to 12 surgeries every month at Shubhyash Hospital & Speciality Clinic, Bhojuveer, treating wrist, hand, arm, collarbone, elbow, shoulder, hip, femur, tibia, ankle and foot fractures with plaster casting, closed reduction, plating, intramedullary nailing, K-wire fixation and external fixation. Because this orthopedic fracture specialist in Varanasi works in a hospital with a 24x7 trauma and emergency service, a fresh injury is examined, X-rayed and splinted the same night rather than held over until the next morning.

He holds an MS and a DNB in Orthopaedics, an MCh, and a Diploma from SICOT (Société Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie), the international orthopaedic and trauma society based in Belgium. Over more than twelve years of practice he has combined Indian and international training in complex joint and spine work with modern trauma management, and he leads orthopaedics and trauma care at Shubhyash Hospital, where he performs 10 to 12 surgeries every month.

Patients and families value three things about his approach. He tries non-surgical treatment first and says so when surgery is not needed. He explains the X-rays and scans, the options, the risks and the costs in plain Hindi or English. And he gives every surgical patient a written plan with expected timelines, so recovery is measured rather than guessed.

Clear diagnosis, honest options, and a recovery plan you can measure.

What Is Fracture Treatment and When Is Fracture Surgery Required?

Fracture treatment puts a broken bone back into position and holds it there until it unites, and fracture surgery is required only when the break cannot be held accurately enough in a plaster cast. Most fractures unite in about six to twelve weeks and a large proportion never need an operation. The decision turns on two questions an X-ray answers: has the bone moved, and can a cast hold it?

Every fracture plan has the same three parts, whatever the bone. Reduction restores the alignment, either by manipulating the limb without opening it or by exposing the fracture and placing the fragments by hand. Fixation holds that position, with a cast or with a plate, a nail, wires or an external frame. Rehabilitation restores movement and strength in the joints above and below the break, because a bone that unites in a stiff limb is only half a result.

Fracture surgery becomes necessary when the fragments are displaced or rotated beyond what the bone will tolerate, when the fracture runs into a joint surface, when the skin is broken, when several bones are broken at once, or when a hip fracture must be fixed so an older patient can be stood up quickly.

First Aid Before You Reach the Fracture Hospital in Varanasi

First aid for a suspected fracture has four steps that take two minutes and change the outcome: stop using the limb, support it, control the swelling and reach a hospital with X-ray facilities. Never straighten a deformed limb or push a protruding bone back under the skin. Immobilise the part as it lies with rolled newspaper or folded cloth tied above and below the break, support an injured arm in a sling, raise the limb and use ice wrapped in cloth. Cover an open wound, remove rings before the hand swells, and give nothing to eat or drink.

Who Needs Fracture Treatment in Varanasi?

Fracture treatment in Varanasi is needed by anyone whose X-ray shows a broken bone, and fracture surgery specifically by those whose fragments are displaced, whose joint surface is involved, whose skin is broken, or who has a hip fracture that must be fixed within 24 to 48 hours. Dr. Shwetabh Rai sees these eight presentations most often, and each is matched against the X-ray first.

Wrist and Hand Fractures After a Fall on an Outstretched Hand, assessed by Dr. Shwetabh Rai, fracture and trauma surgeon in Varanasi

Wrist and Hand Fractures After a Fall on an Outstretched Hand

A fall onto the outstretched hand is the commonest cause of a broken wrist, showing as pain above the wrist, rapid swelling and an inability to grip. Wrist fracture treatment in Varanasi begins with an X-ray in two views: an undisplaced break goes into a cast, a displaced one needs a plate or K-wires. A rotated finger bone that unites crooked crosses its neighbour.

Arm and Elbow Fractures That You Cannot Straighten or Bend, assessed by Dr. Shwetabh Rai, fracture and trauma surgeon in Varanasi

Arm and Elbow Fractures That You Cannot Straighten or Bend

Pain over the upper arm or elbow with swelling and a joint that refuses to straighten points to a fracture of the humerus, the olecranon or the radial head. Arm fracture treatment in Varanasi depends on the joint surface: an undisplaced crack can be braced, while a broken joint surface is plated so the elbow, which stiffens fastest of all joints, can move early.

Collarbone and Shoulder Fractures After a Fall or Two-Wheeler Accident, assessed by Dr. Shwetabh Rai, fracture and trauma surgeon in Varanasi

Collarbone and Shoulder Fractures After a Fall or Two-Wheeler Accident

Landing on the point of the shoulder, the usual two-wheeler mechanism, breaks the collarbone or the top of the humerus, showing as a tented lump and an arm held against the chest. Most collarbone fracture treatment in Varanasi is non-surgical, in a sling, because the bone unites well. Plating is reserved for a collarbone badly shortened or broken in several places.

Hip and Femur Fractures in Older Patients After a Minor Fall, assessed by Dr. Shwetabh Rai, fracture and trauma surgeon in Varanasi

Hip and Femur Fractures in Older Patients After a Minor Fall

A hip fracture in an older patient usually follows a trivial fall at home, with thigh pain, a leg that looks shortened and rolled outwards, and an inability to stand. This fracture is a race against the clock: NICE recommends surgery on the day of admission or the day after, within 24 to 48 hours, because every extra day in bed adds chest infection, pressure sores and clots. Such a fragility fracture also prompts osteoporosis assessment.

Leg and Tibia Fractures That Cannot Take Your Weight, assessed by Dr. Shwetabh Rai, fracture and trauma surgeon in Varanasi

Leg and Tibia Fractures That Cannot Take Your Weight

A broken tibia announces itself clearly: severe shin pain, obvious swelling or deformity, and a leg that gives way under weight. Tibia fracture treatment in Varanasi follows the pattern, with a stable crack managed in a brace and a displaced shaft fracture fixed with an intramedullary nail. The shin is the commonest site of an open fracture, so any wound over it is an emergency.

Ankle and Foot Fractures With Swelling and Inability to Walk, assessed by Dr. Shwetabh Rai, fracture and trauma surgeon in Varanasi

Ankle and Foot Fractures With Swelling and Inability to Walk

An ankle that twists, swells within minutes and will not take weight needs an X-ray rather than a bandage, because fracture and severe sprain look almost identical. Ankle fracture treatment in Varanasi turns on whether the joint is still congruent: a stable fracture goes into a cast or boot, a displaced one is plated, since millimetres of malalignment cause arthritis later.

Fractures in Children, Including Growth Plate Injuries, assessed by Dr. Shwetabh Rai, fracture and trauma surgeon in Varanasi

Fractures in Children, Including Growth Plate Injuries

A child who stops using an arm or leg after a fall and cries on any attempt to move it likely has a fracture even when the X-ray looks almost normal. Children break bones differently: buckle and greenstick fractures bend rather than snap, growth plate injuries may not show on a first film, and remodelling forgives angulation an adult could not.

Multiple or Complex Fractures After a Road Accident, assessed by Dr. Shwetabh Rai, fracture and trauma surgeon in Varanasi

Multiple or Complex Fractures After a Road Accident

A road accident that breaks several bones, or one bone into many pieces, is treated as orthopaedic trauma rather than a list of fractures. The priority is the patient, not the X-ray: breathing, bleeding, head and abdominal injury come first, unstable limbs are splinted or externally fixed, and fixation follows once the soft tissues allow. Complex fracture treatment in Varanasi is why the 24x7 trauma service exists.

Fracture Treatment Without Surgery: Cast, Splint, Brace and Closed Reduction

A large share of fractures heal perfectly well without an operation, so Dr. Rai treats every break that can be held safely from outside the limb without surgery. If the fragments can be brought into acceptable position and kept there, a cast does the same job as an implant with none of the surgical risk.

  • Plaster castHolds an undisplaced or well-reduced bone while it unites
  • Splint or slingSupports a collarbone, shoulder or finger fracture
  • Functional braceAllows controlled movement while the bone heals
  • Closed reductionThe bone is manipulated back into line without any incision
  • Protected weight-bearingCrutches or a walker with a set weight limit
  • Follow-up X-raysRepeat films confirm the position has not slipped

Non-surgical treatment is not a soft option and not for every fracture. An open wound, an incongruent joint, a displaced hip fracture, a numb or cold limb, and a fracture that slips inside a cast all need surgery instead. See cast or fracture surgery and implants used in fracture fixation.

Types of Fracture Treated in Varanasi and How Each Is Managed

Dr. Shwetabh Rai treats five broad groups of fracture in Varanasi, closed and stable fractures, displaced fractures, open or compound fractures, hip and femur fractures in older patients, and fractures in children, and the group a break belongs to decides whether it is cast or operated. Select each tab below.

Closed Fracture Treatment in Varanasi Without Surgery by Dr. Shwetabh Rai at Shubhyash Hospital, Varanasi

Closed Fracture Treatment in Varanasi Without Surgery

A closed fracture is one where the skin over the broken bone is intact, and a stable one is where the fragments have not moved far enough to matter. This is the commonest group at any fracture clinic in Varanasi, and most of it never reaches theatre.

  • Treated in a cast, splint or brace after a check X-ray confirms the position
  • Repeat X-rays confirm the bone has not slipped inside the cast
  • Cast time is three to six weeks in adults and shorter in children

Cast or Fracture Surgery: How the Decision Is Made

The choice between a cast and fracture surgery is made on the X-ray, not on preference, and it comes down to one test: can this bone be held in an acceptable position from outside the limb until it unites? If yes, a cast is better, because it carries no surgical risk. If no, fixation surgery holds the alignment a cast cannot.

Without surgery

Fracture Treatment Without Surgery in Varanasi

  • For undisplaced or minimally displaced fractures with a stable pattern
  • Closed reduction, then a cast, splint, sling or functional brace
  • No incision, no implant and no anaesthetic or surgical infection risk
  • Needs repeat X-rays, because a cast can lose the position
  • Joints inside the cast stiffen, so physiotherapy starts when it comes off

Usually advised for: stable wrist and forearm fractures, most collarbone fractures, undisplaced ankle fractures, and buckle and greenstick fractures in children.

With surgery

Fracture Fixation Surgery in Varanasi

  • For displaced, unstable, intra-articular, open or multiple fractures
  • Reduction, then a plate and screws, a nail, wires or an external frame
  • Holds alignment accurately and lets the neighbouring joints move early
  • Carries the real risks of surgery: infection, anaesthesia, implant problems
  • Weight-bearing is often allowed sooner and more predictably than in a cast

Usually advised for: displaced wrist and ankle fractures, joint-surface fractures, hip and femur fractures, displaced tibial shafts, open fractures, and any fracture that slips in a cast.

Implants Used in Fracture Fixation Surgery

Fracture fixation surgery uses four kinds of implant, a plate with screws, an intramedullary nail, wires or K-wires, and an external fixator frame, each chosen for the bone, the pattern of the break and the state of the skin over it. None of them heals the fracture; they hold the bone still and in the right place so that your own bone can do the healing.

Fracture Implant Choices Explained Simply for Patients

  • MaterialTitanium and stainless steel are standard, strong and well tolerated
  • Plate or nail?Plates suit joint-area fractures; nails suit long bone shafts
  • Do they stay in?In adults an implant usually stays unless it causes a problem
  • Removal in childrenWires and plates in children are commonly removed after union
  • Will I set off scanners?Airport scanners are not usually a problem with modern metal
  • What decides itThe bone, the fracture pattern, the skin and your bone quality

How Fracture Surgery Is Performed Step by Step

Fracture surgery is performed in six stages, assessment with X-rays, splinting and the treatment decision, anaesthesia, reduction of the fragments, fixation with an implant, and closure with early movement the same day. Follow the steps below to see what happens at each stage.

Examination, X-Ray and Fracture Classification during fracture surgery by Dr. Shwetabh Rai at Shubhyash Hospital, Varanasi
Step 1 of 6

Examination, X-Ray and Fracture Classification

In the emergency room or clinic

Dr. Rai examines the limb for deformity and tenderness, then checks the three things that change the plan at once: whether the skin is broken, whether pulses and sensation beyond the fracture are normal, and whether another injury has been missed. X-rays in two views establish the pattern.

Benefits of Fracture Fixation Surgery Over a Cast Alone

The benefit of fracture fixation surgery is accurate alignment held securely enough that the limb can move within days, and it is most valuable where a cast cannot hold the bone or where weeks of immobility would do more harm than the operation. For a stable fracture a cast gives the same result with less risk, which is why the two are weighed on your own X-ray.

Alignment That Is Accurate and Stays Accurate

A plate, nail or wire holds the reduction exactly where the surgeon put it, confirmed on X-ray in theatre. A displaced fracture in a cast can slip as the swelling settles, which is the commonest reason a cast is abandoned for surgery.

Early Movement of the Nearby Joints

Because the bone is held by the implant rather than the plaster, the shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee or ankle beside the fracture can move within days. That is what prevents the stiffness which takes longer to treat than the fracture itself.

Getting Older Patients Out of Bed Quickly

In hip and femur fractures the real danger is immobility, not the break. Fixing or replacing the hip within 24 to 48 hours allows standing the next day and reduces the chest infections, pressure sores and clots that come with weeks in bed.

A Joint Surface Rebuilt Properly

Where a fracture runs into a joint, the surface has to be smooth and level or the joint wears out years later. Open reduction lets the fragments be placed under direct vision and fixed, which no cast can achieve.

Less Time in Plaster, Fewer Restrictions

Fixation often replaces six weeks of rigid plaster with a light splint and a clear weight-bearing instruction. Washing, dressing, sleeping and light work all become considerably easier during the healing period.

A Predictable Return to Work and Routine

Most patients with an upper limb fracture return to desk work within two to four weeks of fixation, and lower limb fractures allow office work once walking is comfortable. Heavy manual work waits for union on the X-ray.

Risks and Complications of Fracture Treatment and Fracture Surgery

Fracture treatment carries real risks whether or not it involves surgery, infection, delayed or failed union, malunion, joint stiffness, implant problems, nerve and vessel injury, clots and compartment syndrome, and serious complications are uncommon but never zero. Dr. Shwetabh Rai goes through each of these before you consent, because a decision taken without them is not an informed decision.

Infection

Wound infection is uncommon after a closed fracture fixed electively, and is reduced by antibiotics before the incision and careful wound care. The risk is considerably higher after an open fracture, and deep infection around an implant may need further surgery.

Delayed Union and Non-Union

Some fractures take longer than expected to unite and a few never unite without further surgery, which is non-union. Smoking, diabetes, poor nutrition, an open fracture and a badly comminuted break all raise the risk, which is why stopping smoking is insisted upon.

Malunion and Shortening

A bone can unite in a position that is not quite right, leaving an angulation, a rotation or a shortened limb. Minor malunion is often tolerated well, especially in children, but one that affects function or a joint surface may need corrective surgery.

Joint Stiffness and Muscle Wasting

Any limb held still loses movement and muscle bulk, and the elbow, shoulder and ankle stiffen fastest. This is the commonest unwanted outcome of fracture treatment, and it is prevented by physiotherapy starting as early as the fixation safely allows.

Nerve, Vessel and Soft Tissue Injury

Nerves and vessels run close to bone and can be injured by the fracture itself or, rarely, during surgery, causing numbness, weakness or a cold limb. Pulses and sensation are checked before and after every reduction.

Compartment Syndrome and Clots

Severe swelling inside the tight muscle compartments of the forearm or leg can cut off their own blood supply, which is compartment syndrome and a surgical emergency. Deep vein thrombosis is also a real risk, so early movement is encouraged.

Fracture Recovery Time and Bone Fracture Healing Time, Week by Week

Fracture recovery time runs from moving the nearby joints on day one to confirmed union at about six to twelve weeks, with a hospital stay of one to three days, cast removal between three and six weeks in adults, and heavy work cleared only on the X-ray. Open each stage below for what is restricted.

  1. 1
    Before surgery

    Preparing for Fracture Surgery

    Hours to days before

Preparation is shorter than for planned surgery because the clock matters, but the same checks are done: blood tests, an ECG where age requires it, and a physician fitness review.

    • Nothing to eat or drink once surgery is planned, as the team instructs
    • Blood thinners, diabetes and heart medicines reviewed and adjusted on advice
    • Bring all X-rays, reports and a list of current medicines
    • Remove rings and bangles from the limb before it swells further
  2. 2
    Day 0 to 2

    Hospital Stay After Fracture Surgery

    In hospital

The limb is kept elevated to control swelling, pain is managed with tablets and injections, and a physiotherapist moves the nearby joints and stands lower limb patients up.

    • Finger, wrist and shoulder movement begins the same day after upper limb fixation
    • Standing with support usually begins the day after hip or femur surgery
    • Hospital stay is commonly one to three days, longer for open fractures
    • Discharged with a written weight-bearing limit and the next X-ray date
  3. 3
    Week 1 to 2

The First Two Weeks at Home

    Early recovery

The first fortnight is about elevation, wound care and gentle movement rather than strengthening, with stitches out around ten to fourteen days.

    • Keep the limb elevated above heart level to settle the swelling
    • Keep a plaster cast completely dry and never push anything inside it
    • Move every joint that has not been immobilised, several times a day
    • Report fever, discharge, rising pain, numbness or a tight cast at once
  4. 4
    Week 2 to 6

    Bone Healing and Graded Rehabilitation

    Rehabilitation

The bone does most of its early healing now and physiotherapy moves from movement to control, and casts come off in this window in most adults.

    • Repeat X-rays at about two and six weeks confirm position and early union
    • Cast or splint removal in most adults between three and six weeks
    • Weight-bearing progressed step by step as instructed, not all at once
    • Desk work commonly resumes now after an upper limb fracture
  5. 5
    Week 6 to 12+

Union, Strength and Return to Normal Life

    Later recovery

Most fractures are united by six to twelve weeks, with children faster and the tibia and femur slower, and the remaining work is strength.

    • Union confirmed on X-ray and by the absence of tenderness, not by the calendar
    • Full weight-bearing and normal walking once union is confirmed
    • Heavy manual work and contact sport are cleared individually
    • Implant removal only if the metal causes a problem, or routinely in children

Fracture Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy in Varanasi

Fracture rehabilitation and physiotherapy begin in hospital on day one and continue for about three months, because fixation holds the bone while physiotherapy restores the movement and strength lost while the limb was protected. Stiffness after a fracture is harder to treat than the fracture was, and it is preventable.

Daily Life After Fracture Treatment: What You Can Do and When

After fracture treatment most patients move every joint that is not immobilised from day one, return to desk work in two to four weeks for an upper limb injury, drive once out of plaster and able to brake safely, and resume most usual activities around ten to twelve weeks once the bone has united. Healing time varies by bone, so these are confirmed against your follow-up X-rays rather than the calendar.

From day 1Moving every joint that is not immobilisedIf your wrist is in plaster, move your fingers, elbow and shoulder; if your ankle is immobilised, move your knee and hip. Joints stiffen quickly when they are not used, and the stiffness that develops in neighbouring joints is often harder to recover from than the fracture itself. Move them several times a day from the first day.
From day 1Elevation and ice over the dressingKeep the injured limb raised above the level of your heart whenever you are resting, which is what most reduces swelling and throbbing in the first week. A swollen limb inside a cast is also what causes dangerous tightness, so elevation is not just about comfort. Use ice over the dressing as you were advised, never directly on skin.
From day 1Walking to your weight-bearing limitYou are given a specific instruction: non-weight-bearing, partial weight-bearing, or weight-bearing as comfort allows. This is decided by the fracture pattern and how it was fixed, and it is not a general rule you can take from someone else. Exceeding it can displace the fracture or loosen the fixation.
Week 1 to 2Cast and wound checksA cast is checked for tightness and the wound for infection at your early review. Report immediately if fingers or toes become numb, pale, blue or increasingly painful, if the cast becomes wet, cracked or loose, or if you develop fever with discharge from a wound. These are not things to leave until the next appointment.
Around 2–4 weeksDesk work after an upper limb fractureAfter a wrist, hand or forearm fracture, most desk-based workers return within two to four weeks, often one-handed at first and with the limb elevated where possible. After a lower limb fracture, return depends on whether you can get to work safely and sit with the limb raised, which usually takes longer.
Around 6 weeksDrivingYou can drive once you are out of plaster, off strong painkillers, and able to grip the wheel and perform an emergency stop without hesitation or pain. Being physically able to sit in the car is not the test. Check your insurer’s position too, because driving against medical advice can affect cover.
Around 10–12 weeksSwimming, cycling and most usual activitiesOnce follow-up X-rays confirm the bone has united, most usual activities are reintroduced over the following weeks. Swimming and cycling come first because they load the bone progressively and predictably. Many fractures heal in six to eight weeks, while complex ones take three to six months or longer, so this follows your X-rays.
Until clearedHeavy lifting, gripping and full weight-bearingLoading a fracture before it has united is the main avoidable cause of displacement, delayed union and failed fixation. Metalwork holds the bone while it heals; it is not a substitute for healed bone and will eventually fatigue if asked to carry the load alone. Progress only when your surgeon confirms the X-rays allow it.
AlwaysSmokingSmoking is one of the few factors under your control that measurably delays bone union and raises the risk that a fracture does not unite at all. The effect is strongest in the first weeks after injury or surgery. Stopping, even temporarily while the bone heals, genuinely changes the odds in your favour.

How Much Does Fracture Treatment Cost in Varanasi?

Fracture treatment cost in Varanasi depends on six factors, whether the fracture is cast or operated, which bone and how many are broken, which implant is used, the room category and length of stay, your other health conditions and what the package includes, so Shubhyash Hospital gives a written itemised estimate after examination and X-ray rather than a fixed price. Any website quoting one fixed price without seeing your X-ray is guessing.

How to Choose the Best Fracture Doctor in Varanasi

Choosing the best fracture doctor in Varanasi comes down to six checks, orthopaedic trauma training, whether the hospital is open when your injury happens, whether the doctor will treat your fracture without surgery when a cast will do, how clearly your X-ray is explained, what the written estimate contains, and who provides the physiotherapy. Ask these at the consultation rather than judging from a website.

Formal Orthopaedic and Trauma Qualifications

Ask what the doctor trained in and where. Dr. Shwetabh Rai holds an MS and DNB in Orthopaedics, an MCh and a Diploma from SICOT in Belgium, with more than twelve years of orthopaedic and trauma practice.

A Fracture Hospital That Is Open When You Are Injured

Fractures do not happen in clinic hours. Shubhyash Hospital runs an OPD until 10:00 PM and a 24x7 trauma and emergency service, so an injury at night is X-rayed, splinted and planned the same night.

A Doctor Who Will Say Your Fracture Does Not Need Surgery

The most useful answer a fracture surgeon can give is that a cast will do the job. A doctor who recommends fixation for every break, without showing you why the position is unacceptable, is one to question.

A Clear Explanation of Your Own X-Ray

You should leave knowing which bone is broken, how far it has moved, whether the joint surface is involved and what happens if it unites that way. If the film is described only in general terms, ask to be shown it.

A Written, Itemised Estimate

Ask for the estimate in writing with implants, theatre, stay, plaster, physiotherapy and check X-rays listed separately. A bundled figure makes it impossible to compare hospitals.

Physiotherapy and Follow-Up Under One Roof

Fracture results depend heavily on the rehabilitation that follows. Confirm who provides physiotherapy, when the check X-rays are due, and what your weight-bearing limit is.

Your Fracture Treatment Journey at Shubhyash Hospital, Step by Step

Fracture treatment at Shubhyash Hospital follows six stops from arrival at the 24x7 emergency service to rehabilitation, and a cast is used whenever it can hold the bone in position.

Start: come straight in or call +91 99567 61112
  1. 1
    24x7 emergency

Arrival at the 24x7 Trauma and Emergency Service

A fresh injury is seen when it happens, day or night. The limb is examined, pulses and sensation are checked, pain relief is given and the part is splinted before anything else is planned.

You leave withA splinted limb and pain relief, the same night
  2. 2
    On arrival

X-Rays, and a CT Scan Where It Is Needed

X-rays in two views establish which bone is broken and how far it has moved. CT is added when the fracture runs into a joint surface.

You leave withA clear fracture pattern, not just a broken bone
  3. 3
    After your X-ray

The Treatment Decision, Explained on Your Own Film

Dr. Rai shows you the X-ray and says plainly whether a cast will hold this fracture or whether fixation is needed, with the risks, the timeline and the estimate for each.

You leave withA clear answer, with surgery only when a cast cannot hold it
  4. 4
    Same visit or urgently

Cast, Closed Reduction or Fracture Fixation Surgery

A stable fracture is reduced if needed and cast the same visit. A displaced, open or hip fracture goes to theatre, urgently where the injury demands it.

You leave withA bone position confirmed on X-ray
  5. 5
    Commonly 1–3 days

    Hospital Stay and Getting Moving

The limb is elevated, pain is controlled, and a physiotherapist moves the free joints and stands you up with support.

You leave withHome, moving safely, commonly within one to three days
  6. 6
    About 3 months

Check X-Rays, Cast Removal and Rehabilitation

Stitches come out around ten to fourteen days, check X-rays at about two and six weeks confirm union, and physiotherapy runs for roughly three months.

You leave withA written plan with dates on it
Finish: back to daily life

Where do I go for emergency fracture treatment in Varanasi at night?

Go straight to the 24x7 trauma and emergency service at Shubhyash Hospital, Bhojuveer, where a fresh fracture is examined, X-rayed and splinted the same night.

Call +91 99567 61112 on the way so the team is ready. Do not wait for the morning OPD if any of these apply.

  • Deformity: the limb looks bent or shortened.
  • Broken skin: any wound over a suspected fracture.
  • Circulation: fingers or toes turn pale, blue or cold.
  • Standing: you cannot stand on the leg after a fall.

Emergency fracture treatment in Varanasi works best when you remove rings and bangles before the limb swells.

Can a fracture be treated without surgery?

Yes, a large proportion of fractures heal without surgery, using a plaster cast, splint, sling or functional brace to hold the bone until it unites.

Closed reduction comes first if the bone needs manipulating back into line, and repeat X-rays confirm the position has not slipped.

  • Wrist and forearm: stable fractures are usually managed this way.
  • Collarbone: most collarbone fractures heal without surgery.
  • Ankle: undisplaced ankle fractures are usually casted.
  • Children: buckle and greenstick fractures usually heal in a cast.

Fracture treatment without surgery in Varanasi works whenever a cast can hold an acceptable position.

Compare cast and surgery →

How do you decide between a cast and fracture surgery?

The choice between a cast and fracture surgery rests on the X-ray and one test: whether the bone can be held in position from outside the limb until it unites.

If it can, a cast is better because it carries no surgical risk. If it cannot, fixation surgery holds the alignment a cast cannot.

  • Displacement: fragments that are displaced or rotated.
  • Joint surface: a fracture that enters a joint.
  • Skin: an open fracture with broken skin.
  • Slippage: a follow-up film showing the position has slipped.

Any of these four findings usually moves fracture treatment in Varanasi towards surgery.

How long does a bone fracture take to heal?

Most fractures unite in about six to twelve weeks, though bone fracture healing time varies with the bone broken, your age and your general health.

Healing is confirmed on X-ray and by the absence of tenderness, rather than by the calendar.

  • Children: often three to four weeks for a forearm.
  • Most adult fractures: about six to twelve weeks.
  • Tibia and femur: three months or longer.
  • Cast removal: between three and six weeks in most adults.

Fracture recovery time in Varanasi is checked with repeat X-rays at about two and six weeks.

How much does fracture surgery cost in Varanasi?

Fracture surgery cost in Varanasi has no single fixed figure, because it depends on whether the fracture is cast or operated, the bone, the implant and your hospital stay.

Shubhyash Hospital gives a written, itemised estimate after X-ray, and accepts Ayushman Bharat, health insurance and cashless TPA.

  • Cast or surgery: a cast costs a fraction of a fixation operation.
  • Bone: a femur or multiple fractures need more theatre time than a wrist.
  • Implant: a nail, locking plate, K-wires and a frame all differ in cost.
  • Stay: room category and length of stay, usually one to three days.

When comparing fracture surgery cost in Varanasi, ask whether physiotherapy, plaster changes and check X-rays are extra.

Is fracture treatment covered under Ayushman Bharat?

Yes, eligible patients can have fracture treatment under Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) at Shubhyash Hospital, with eligibility checked at admission without delaying urgent treatment.

Health insurance and cashless TPA are also accepted, and for an emergency admission the team begins pre-authorisation while treatment starts.

  • Documents: bring your Ayushman card and photo ID at admission.
  • Emergency: treatment is not delayed while eligibility is checked.
  • Insurance: share your policy at admission rather than afterwards.
  • Coverage: ask what is covered for implants and room rent.

Fracture treatment under Ayushman Bharat in Varanasi starts faster when a family member brings the card.

Why is hip fracture surgery in the elderly done so urgently?

Hip fracture surgery in the elderly is urgent because the danger comes as much from lying in bed as from the broken bone.

NICE guidance recommends surgery on the day of admission or the day after, so the patient can be stood up early.

  • Chest: early standing helps avoid chest infection.
  • Skin: it helps avoid pressure sores.
  • Circulation: it helps avoid blood clots.
  • Standing: standing with support usually begins the day after surgery.

A hip fracture in Varanasi should reach the emergency service the same day.

What is different about an open or compound fracture?

An open or compound fracture is one where bone has broken through the skin, which gives bacteria direct access to the bone and raises the infection risk.

Treatment is urgent and runs in a set order, and the hospital stay is usually longer than for a closed fracture.

  • Antibiotics: started as early as possible.
  • Tetanus: cover is given early.
  • Theatre: urgent surgical cleaning of the wound.
  • Stabilisation: a fixator or internal fixation.

Any wound over a suspected fracture in Varanasi needs the emergency service, not the OPD.

Are fractures in children treated differently?

Yes, children's fractures are treated differently, because their bones bend before breaking, heal faster, remodel angulation and have growth plates to protect.

Pediatric fracture treatment therefore relies far more on casting and flexible wires than adult treatment does.

  • Bending: buckle and greenstick fractures are common.
  • Healing: children heal much faster than adults.
  • Remodelling: bone reshapes angulation no adult would be allowed.
  • Growth plates: these need protecting during treatment.

Pediatric fracture treatment in Varanasi often ends with wires and plates being removed once the bone unites.

How do I look after a plaster cast at home?

Keep a plaster cast completely dry, elevate the limb above heart level for the first few days, and move every joint the cast leaves free.

Never push an object inside the cast to scratch. Follow these rules at home, and treat the last two as same-day problems.

  • Bathing: cover the cast in a sealed bag; a wet cast must be checked at hospital.
  • Swelling: elevate the limb and use ice over the cast, not under it, for 48 hours.
  • Fit: come in the same day if it becomes painfully tight, cracks or loosens.
  • Circulation: come in the same day for numbness, or toes that look pale or cold.

Your plaster cast is checked for tightness at your early review.

When can I put weight on a broken leg, ankle or foot?

Put weight on a broken leg, ankle or foot only when told to, because the instruction depends on your fracture pattern and fixation.

Going beyond your limit can displace the fracture or loosen the fixation, so follow the written limit given at discharge.

  • Non-weight-bearing: the limb stays fully protected.
  • Partial weight-bearing: some nailed or plated fractures allow this with crutches within days.
  • As comfort allows: used only when your fracture permits it.
  • Full weight-bearing: begins once union is confirmed.

Your next X-ray date in Varanasi is written down alongside your weight-bearing limit.

See fracture recovery week by week →

Do the plates, screws and nails have to be removed later?

No, plates, screws and nails normally stay in permanently in adults, and are removed only if they cause a problem such as irritation or infection.

Implants hold the bone still while your own bone does the healing. Children are the main exception to the adult rule.

  • Adults: an implant usually stays unless it causes a problem.
  • Reasons to remove: irritation under the skin, pain over the metal, infection or loosening.
  • Children: wires and plates are commonly removed after union.
  • Airport scanners: not usually a problem with modern metal.

Your fracture implant is explained in plain language before surgery.

See the implants explained →

What happens if a fracture does not heal?

A fracture that stops healing is a non-union, which usually needs further surgery such as bone grafting, while one healing slowly is a delayed union.

Union is watched on your follow-up X-rays, and some of the risk factors are within your control.

  • Smoking: the strongest risk factor you can change.
  • Open fracture: a higher risk than a closed fracture.
  • Diabetes: raises the risk of slow healing.
  • Poor nutrition: raises the risk of slow healing.

Keep every follow-up X-ray appointment, because slow healing is easier to manage when it is caught early.

When can I go back to work and start driving after a fracture?

Desk work commonly resumes two to four weeks after an upper limb fracture, and driving usually waits until around six weeks, once you are out of plaster.

These timings vary by bone, so they are confirmed against your follow-up X-rays rather than the calendar.

  • Upper limb: desk work commonly returns at two to four weeks.
  • Lower limb: desk work returns once walking is comfortable.
  • Driving: once you can grip the wheel and perform an emergency stop.
  • Heavy work: cleared individually after union.

Check your insurer's position too, because driving against medical advice can affect cover.
